Oklahoma 55, UW uh, 14…

Posted in assignment work, sports, Washington by bermanphotos on September 15, 2008

I had the pleasure of shooting the Oklahoma at Washington game this past Saturday, in the process witnessing a spectacular game where the away team scored nearly every possession. In my first NCAA game for Icon SMI I got to see a ton of action and luckily, even capture some of it. It was cool just to be working this assignment on my own — a true milestone.

I got to Husky Stadium around 2 and 1/2 hrs before the game was to start, mostly to ensure I could meet up with John Froschauer to pick up my credentials. Froschauer was shooting for another client, so I got the opportunity to cover this cool game for ICON in his place. Reliably, those credentials had his name on them, and I got more than a few cockeyed glances that shouted “you’re not John…”

At any rate, here are a few images from Saturday:

As the game was close to wrapping up I noticed that there was a pretty much full moon out, and decided to frame it with the devestatingly lopsided scoreboard.

Along the same lines, I wanted to make a few pictures that captured the emotions of UW’s players and fans as they handled losing.

Washington cornerback Matt Mosley #19 and linebacker Matt Houston #5 take a long look at the scoreboard following their 55-14 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Overall I am pretty pleased with my take from this game, but some things I want to do for my next

NCAA game:

1) work the light even more — there was a nice sunset and I need to make use of that more.

2) Shoot tighter — no excuses.

3) Concentrate on what is storytelling in the game and work that more

4) Work the periphery of the game more, hunt for more features, and use my wide angle more

Thanks for looking everyone!

Daniel
