Ryan’s Tattoo
I shot this during a photo shoot with a basketball player for Shoreline Community College.

I lit this using 3 Nikon speedlights, all connected to Pocket Wizard Plus II Transceivers. My main light was a small softbox camera left, background light was flagged top and bottom, and there was also a hair/rim light subject left-back.
There is a certain cool factor and edge to this picture that I really dig. I showed the picture to Ryan post-shoot and his quote made my day: “I look like a badass.”

Oklahoma 55, UW uh, 14…
I had the pleasure of shooting the Oklahoma at Washington game this past Saturday, in the process witnessing a spectacular game where the away team scored nearly every possession. In my first NCAA game for Icon SMI I got to see a ton of action and luckily, even capture some of it. It was cool just to be working this assignment on my own — a true milestone.
I got to Husky Stadium around 2 and 1/2 hrs before the game was to start, mostly to ensure I could meet up with John Froschauer to pick up my credentials. Froschauer was shooting for another client, so I got the opportunity to cover this cool game for ICON in his place. Reliably, those credentials had his name on them, and I got more than a few cockeyed glances that shouted “you’re not John…”
At any rate, here are a few images from Saturday:

Quarterback Sam Bradford #14 of the Oklahoma Sooners celebrates with teammates as Washington safety Nate Williams #8 looks on after scoring a 3rd quarter touchdown over the Washington Huskies Saturday Sept. 13 at Husky Stadium in Seattle, WA. Oklahoma defeated UW 55-14.

Quarterback Sam Bradford #14 of the Oklahoma Sooners reaches across the goaline to score a touchdown over the Washington Huskies Saturday Sept. 13 at Husky Stadium in Seattle, WA. Oklahoma defeated UW 55-14.

13 September 2008: Oklahoma wide receiver Ryan Broyles (#85) is wide open as he receives a 15 yard throw by QB Sam Bradford during a NCAA football game against the Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium in Seattle, WA. Oklahoma defeated UW 55-14.

Oklahoma running back Chris Brown #29 breaks through a line of Washington defenders. Brown rushed a total of 107 yards against the Huskies on Saturday.

The Oklahoma coaching staff wear their surprise on their faces when Washington nearly intercepts the ball late in the 3rd quarter.

Having lost hope, Washington fans in the upper sections of Husky Stadium begin to filter out in the 4th quarter.
As the game was close to wrapping up I noticed that there was a pretty much full moon out, and decided to frame it with the devestatingly lopsided scoreboard.
Along the same lines, I wanted to make a few pictures that captured the emotions of UW’s players and fans as they handled losing.

Washington cornerback Matt Mosley #19 and linebacker Matt Houston #5 take a long look at the scoreboard following their 55-14 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Washington QB Ronnie Fouch (#8) looks at the scoreboard following Washington's 55-14 loss to Oklahoma.
Overall I am pretty pleased with my take from this game, but some things I want to do for my next
NCAA game:
1) work the light even more — there was a nice sunset and I need to make use of that more.
2) Shoot tighter — no excuses.
3) Concentrate on what is storytelling in the game and work that more
4) Work the periphery of the game more, hunt for more features, and use my wide angle more
Thanks for looking everyone!

Pre-Oklahoma at UW

I am sitting here in the nice and cool press tent at Husky Stadium, surrounded by people I know only by their bylines. Some I have met before, most I have not, but it is cool to finally be sitting here as legitimate press. The last time I was here for a Husky game was in 2005 when I assisted Robert Seale. Then, I was holding his telephoto lenses; now I get to hold my own.
Hopefully this shoot (for ICON SMI) will lead to more work and bigger/better things.
Check back soon for photos from the game!

The Ringers
Photographed The Ringers performing at El Corazon in Seattle. They were definitely an interesting band. and their singer really worked the room.
